Location near campus: on west side of Xeriscape Garden; the Xeriscape Garden is located at the northwest corner of National Avenue and Linwood, about 3/4 mile south of campus.

Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’: ‘Black Lace’ European Elderberry

  • leaves opposite, pinnately compound, with deeply divided, dark-purple leaflets 2-4 inches long and 1/2 as wide
  • stems gray, often bending over at maturity; grows 3-8 feet tall
  • flowers a cyme of pinkish purple flowers in early summer, followed by blackish-red fruit (elderberries)
  • fruit is edible for wildlife and can be made into juice, jelly and wine
