Amaranthus powellii S. Wats.; Palmer Amaranth: (Bayer Code: AMAPO; US Code AMPO2)

  • Warm-season, aggressive annual weed, with upright pyramidal growth habit
  • Similar to redroot pigweed in appearance, except:
    • Leaves are smooth, shiny on upper surface, and more pointed than redroot pigweed
    • Stems are not rough-textured or hairy
    • Has slightly longer terminal inflorescences without spiny bracts sticking out
    • Side branches of terminal panicles are longer than redroot pigweed
  • Common in cultivated crops, roadsides, non-crop land
  • Can readily hybridize with other pigweeds, resulting in weeds with varying pigweed/amaranth characteristics
