Amaranthus powellii S. Wats.; Palmer Amaranth: (Bayer Code: AMAPO; US Code AMPO2)
- Warm-season, aggressive annual weed, with upright pyramidal growth habit
- Similar to redroot pigweed in appearance, except:
- Leaves are smooth, shiny on upper surface, and more pointed than redroot pigweed
- Stems are not rough-textured or hairy
- Has slightly longer terminal inflorescences without spiny bracts sticking out
- Side branches of terminal panicles are longer than redroot pigweed
- Common in cultivated crops, roadsides, non-crop land
- Can readily hybridize with other pigweeds, resulting in weeds with varying pigweed/amaranth characteristics
