Phellodendron amurense: Amur Corktree

Location on or near Missouri State University campus: not known

  • leaves opposite, deciduous, pinnately compound with 5-11 lanceolate leaflets 2.5 � 4.5 inches long and about 1/2 as wide, dark green
  • buds small, with red or rust hairs, enclosed by base of petiole
  • stems stout, yellow-orange becoming brown, with prominent lenticels
  • bark is gray-brown, furrowed, becoming cork-like with age
  • grows 30-50 feet tall and equally wide or wider
  • flowers are dioecious,not showy (greenish-yellow), followed by black drupe fruit in panicle clusters on female trees
  • prefers full sun and moist, fertile soils, but will grow about any soil; however, doesn’t like drought too much and may slow its rate of growth dramatically
  • has become invasive in some areas
