Acer ginnala: Amur Maple
- leaves opposite, simple, deciduous, palmately 3-lobed; dark shiny green above and lighter green below; leaves 1.5-3" long and about 2/3 as wide; fall color often bright orange to red
- stems slender, glabrous, gray-brown when young; gray, rough and striped on older branches
- bark is gray brown, generally smooth, but with some furrows with age
- prefers full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil, but tolerates most soil types
- grows 15-25' tall and often wider in spreading top growth habit; often trained as multi-trunked tree; can be trimmed as a hedge
- medium to slow growth rate; faster when young
- similar to Acer tataricum (Tatarian Maple)--
- leaves similar to Amur maple, except side lobes less pronounced on Tatarian maple
- similar growth habit-- multi-trunked tree or large shrub-- but can grow to 25' tall & wide with age
- similar growth requirements to that of Amur Maple
