Arrowgrass:

  • native perennial grass or rush-like plant found in wet prairies of western Midwest
  • leaves narrow, grass-like, but stiff and thick/fleshy in texture
  • inflorescence a slender spike of greenish-red flowers in June-July
  • very toxic to livestock--not usually selected for grazing, but sometimes is found in hay cut from native prairie grasses grown in wetter soils and can cause poisoning if consumed in new hay
