Acer negundo: Boxelder

  • leaves pinnately compound (with 5 leaflets) or trifoliate, opposite, bright green (variegated on one cultivar)
  • fast-growing native tree to about 3-40’ tall; fairly weak-wooded
  • stems bright green for 1-2 years; bark light brown, furrowed with age
  • prefers moist, well-drained soils--found often in riparian areas, but also tolerant of urban conditions and can be an urban weed tree
  • not used much in landscaping, but can be kept if already present, if limitations are acceptable
  • native to Missouri
