Chara, Stoneworts:

  • a type of algae that looks more like a vascular plant
  • has gray-green needle-like “leaves" on rough, gritty, brittle stems
  • has hard bumps or blisters on "leaves"
  • eaves often lighter green than similar-appearing aquatic weeds
  • has musky or skunky odor if bruised
  • more common in hard, or high alkalinity water
