Phlox subulata: Creeping Phlox, Moss Pink, Thrift, Rock Rose
Location on campus: on north side of Greenwood Lab School, toward east end of circle drive
- simple, linear to awl-shaped, pointed, evergreen, alternate, 1" long leaves
- plant height about 4-6", spreading above ground by prostrate stems
- 3/4" flowers cover the plant in early spring in shades white, pink, lavender, reddish, blue, depending on the cultivar
- needs full sun to part shade, well-drained soils; can tolerate dry sights, but often goes dormant in very hot conditions in summer
- not competitive against weeds
