- U.S. native summer annual that grows from 3-6 inches tall (in turf) and up to 12 inches tall (unmowed) and is equally wide or wider
- Stems and leaves are covered with fine, soft hairs, and plants branch abundantly from the base of the plant, and along the side branches to make a dense mound of stems; entire plant has a dark, gray-green color
- Leaves are linear, pointed, less than 1 inch long
- Found in open turf, preferring moist soil, but can be found in dry sites, too
- Head inflorescences are tiny, greenish or slightly pinkish and do not open fully until seeds/achenes are released; seeds are attached to pappus (“parachute-like hairs") to allow wind dispersal
