Juglans regia: English Walnut

  • deciduous, alternate, pinnately compound leaves with 5-9 leaflests; leaflets lanceolate, 2-5" long and 1/2 as wide
  • twigs stout with large terminal buds; bark is smooth light gray until older when large flat ridges form
  • grows 40-60' tall and equally as wide, medium growth rate
  • nuts are shed easily from husks (compared to black walnut)
  • native to Europe and China
  • prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soils
