Viburnum carlcephalum: Fragrant Snowball Viburnum

  • leaves opposite, simple, ovate, dark green, pubescent above and below, but somewhat shiny upper surface and toothed margins; leaves 2-5 inches long and about 1/2 as wide
  • stems light brown to gray with dense hairs on new growth; older stems nearly glabrous; naked leaves in buds
  • size 10' x 10', irregular-rounded shrub with stiff upright branches
  • flowers fragrant in pink to white 5-6 inch diameter semi-globular clusters at branch tips and some from lateral buds in mid spring
  • fruit is a red changing to black drupe
  • prefers full sun to part shade; does best in moist, well-drained soil
  • medium growth rate
