Location near campus: toward southeast corner of Xeriscape Garden; Xeriscape Garden is at northwest corner of National and Linwood, about 3/4 mile south of campus on National Avenue.
Hypericum patulum: Goldencup St. John's Wort
- leaves deciduous to semi-evergreen, opposite, simple, ovate with entire margins; leaves dark green above and glaucous below; 1-2.5" long and 1/3 to 1/2 as wide
- stems brown, often dying back to ground in winter
- flowers yellow in terminal cymes or solitary, in late spring; bright yellow with many petals and stamens
- rounded growth habit, about 5' x 5'
- likes full sun to part shade and dry, rocky soils; tolerates high pH soils
- fast growth rate, but may need to prune back to ground in spring, periodically
