Goldenrod:

  • a very large group of native, mostly perennial, yellow-flowered weeds in the Aster family
  • most have lanceolate leaves, are 2-6' tall, and panicles of bright yellow flowers in late summer to fall
  • some have creeping root systems; these sometimes are problem goldenrods
    • Missouri Goldenrod (Solidago missouriensis) and Tall or Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis)---are common Missouri goldenrod species that have creeping root systems and spreading panicle arrangements of flower heads
  • not a cause of late summer allergies---pollen is large and not readily windblown
  • commonly grown as an ornamental flower in Europe
  • livestock will eat these readily, so usually not a pasture/range weed problem
