  • Cool season annual grass frequently in wheat fields and other winter annual crops
  • Has mostly upright, slender, mostly hairless leaves
  • Inflorescence is a spike of stacked spikelets which break apart at maturity
  • Each spikelet is awned, with longer awns on tip spikelets--very unique inflorescence
