Helleborus orientalis: Lenten Rose

Location on campus: in the center planting bed (under the beech and Japanese maple trees) in the planting area on the north side of Karls Hall.

  • Evergreen, palmately compound, dark green, alternate leaves; leaflets are linear-lanceolate with serrated margins
  • Plant height about 15-18" tall and wide
  • Flowers in late winter to early spring with magenta to pink to white flowers (actually showy sepals)
  • Prefers part to full shade in moist, well-drained, high organic matter soil
