Location on campus: in the planting beds on either side of the west entrance to Pummill Hall, and many other locations around campus.

  • simple, alternate, semi-evergreen, linear leaves 12-18" long, 1/2" wide with entire margins; either dark green or variegated with yellow stripes on margins
  • stays in clumps, doesn't spread from runners
  • foliage height 12-15"
  • flowers are 2-18" spikes of lavender flowers in late summer; purple-black berries follow
  • good for full sun to shade, tolerant of most soils except very dry
