Location on campus: in small hedge east of Art Annex along drive/walkway; on northeast side of Greenwood Lab School, along drop-off drive off Harrison St.

Berberis x mentorensis: Mentor Barberry

  • leaves semi-evergreen, simple, ovate, alternate, dark green, leathery, rough textured on top with entire or slightly spined (1-5 very tiny spines) margins
  • leaves about 1/2" long and 1/2 as wide; leaves appear in clusters at nodes, but are not whorled, are alternate
  • stems angled, brown with 1 - 3 spines per node
  • grows to 5' tall and 5-7' wide
  • flowers not significant
  • prefers full sun to part-shade, adaptable to many soils types, but prefers drier soils
  • medium to fast growth rate
