  • similar in appearance to pignut hickory in leaves and bark, but nut is in a large, thick husk like shagbark hickory and actual nut is small
  • twigs are pubescent when young and buds are more orange than other hickories
  • bark is diamond-pattern ridged
  • grows 50-60' tall and 1/3 as wide
  • prefers well-drained, upland wooded areas
  • medium growth rate
  • native to Missouri
