Location near campus: toward west side of Xeriscape Garden; Xeriscape Garden is at northwest corner of National and Linwood, about 3/4 mile south of campus on National Avenue.
Weigela florida: Old-Fashioned Weigela
- leaves deciduous, opposite, simple, ovate to oblong with acuminate tip and serrated margins; leaves 2-4.5" long and 1/3 as wide; leaves medium green and glabrous above and slightly pubescent to tomentose on veins underneath
- stems gray-brown, with 2 rows of hairs running longitudinally from node to node; large circular lenticels and continuous pale brown pith
- size is 6-9' tall and equally to slightly greater width with a spreading mounded habit
- flowers are funnel-shaped and generally shades of light to dark pink on outside, with lighter throat zone, blooming in late spring, but sometimes continuing or reblooming through fall
- fruit is a capsule
- prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but soil adaptable
- need to prune back after flowering to maintain good shape
- medium to fast growth rate
