Carya glabra: Pignut Hickory
- leaves alternate, deciduous, pinnately compound with 5-7 leaflets, usually 5
- leaflets 3-6.5" long and 1/2 as wide with terminal 3 leaflets the largest
- bark smooth on young trees, developing into diamond patterned ridges with age
- grows 50-60' tall and 25' wide
- fruit is pear-shaped, 0.75 - 1.5" diameter; husk splits into 4 pieces and nut is ovate with sweet to bitter taste
- medium growth rate
- very good yellow fall foliage color
- prefers well-drained to dry but fertile soils
- native to Missouri
