Red-Stem Filaree:

  • winter annual or biennial in the Geraniaceae (Geranium) family
  • has long, pinnately divided (fernlike) leaves that hug the ground in first year rosette-- rosette is about 4-8 inches in diameter
  • leaves dark-green, stems reddish-pink
  • second year has ascending stalks with clusters of purplish-pink flowers at top in spring
  • seed pods are pointed with a spiraled “tail"
  • can be found in lawns, perennial crops, pastures--prefers sandy soils, but can grow anywhere
  • increasing in southwest Missouri
