• leaves similar to common hackberry, but more slender and darker green and sometimes without rough-textured upper surface--leaf surface may be shiny
• fruit is usually red to blue-black and very sweet � favored by birds
• bark is more warty than common hackberry
• similar growth habit and size of common hackberry
• prefers moister soils than common hackberry - native to floodplains and wetter soils
• native to southeast Missouri
