  • leaves simple, alternate, deciduous, palmately 3-5 lobed; dark green above and white pubescent underneath
  • bark gray to whitish on young trunks, black and fissured on older trunks
  • grows 40-70' tall and produces numerous root suckers
  • short-lived, but tolerant of many soil types and growing conditions
