Groundcherry:

  • three most common species are creeping perennial weeds in pastures, gardens, cultivated fields, waste areas; one species is summer annual
  • much branched stems, yellow-white flowers and small berry fruit enclosed in papery "chinese lantern" structure; plants not spiny
    • Wright’s Groundcherry, Cutleaf Groundcherry:
      • is a summer annual plant, with mostly smooth leaves with toothed margins
      • Grows 12-24" tall in sort of small tree shape
      • Can reseed abundantly
      • Stems may be green or purplish
      • Leaves are triangular with pointed lobes
      • Flowers are almost entirely yellow--no obvious alternate center color as in smooth groundcherry and Virginia groundcherry
      • Fruit globe-shaped, often with purplish veins
