  • U.S. native summer annual broadleaf with opposite, triangular, toothed leaves and rough hairs on leaves and stems
  • flower is about 1-2 inches across, with yellow disk flowers and bright yellow, wide-petalled ray flowers with toothed margins
  • found in cultivated fields and reduced tillage areas
  • prefers fertile, sandy, well-drained soils
  • several relatives are perennial wildflowers that are not weedy
