Cypressvine: (not in Weeds of the Great Plains; not in Weeds of the Northeast)

  • summer annual vine with heart-shaped, but finely divided leaves--almost like only the main veins are present in leaves, not much tissue in between
  • flowers are 1-3 inches long, bright red, trumpet shaped--favored by hummingbirds
  • found in cultivated fields and waste areas
  • similar species: cardinal climber, has more tissue on deeply lobed leaves (fewer divisions) but similar flowers, growth habit and occurrences
