Field Pansy, Field Violet (Viola arvensis):

  • winter annual with oval-shaped leaves with large stipules in the Violaceae (Violet) family
  • flowers usually yellow or yellow and pale blue/lavender like miniature pansies
  • grows 3-10 inches tall, flowering in early to late spring
  • found in open turf (or dormant warm-season turf), cultivated fields and disturbed sites in fertile, well-drained soils
  • can distinguish from field violet which has light blue & white or light blue & pale yellow flowers and more deeply lobed leaves
