- winter annual in turf and landscapes with tiny spatula-shaped leaves with palmately-lobed stipules in the Violaceae (Violet) family
- flowers are pale blue & white or blue & yellow
- grows only 3-5 inches tall
- more common in dormant, warm-season turfgrasses; also in cultivated fields, disturbed sites
- similar european field pansy has larger, more shallowly-lobed leaves and larger, more yellow flowers
