- leaves have waxy/glaucous coating and are not real rigid (may twist or break over with age, like Y. flaccida)
- non-trunk forming, but often offsets to form multiple-crowned clusters with age
- forms well-branched flowering stems in late May to early June
- tolerates alkaline soils
