Biography

Dr. Wenping Qiu is research professor in the Darr College of Agriculture at Missouri State University. He directs the Midwest Center of National Clean Plant Network-Grapevine that provides virus-tested clean grapevines and services of testing viruses. His research group focuses on understanding the molecular and genetic basis of disease resistance in grapevines and finding effective strategies for preventing and managing diseases that cause significant losses to the grape industry.

His team discovered the first DNA virus, grapevine vein clearing virus (GVCV), on grapevine, unveiled natural reservoirs of GVCV, found insect vector of spreading GVCV, and reported that ‘Norton’ and ‘Chambourcin’ grapevines are resistant against GVCV. His team found that ‘Norton’ grapevine resists grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1 (GLRaV-1), suppresses GLRaV-2, GLRaV-3, and grapevine virus A, but supports grapevine fleck virus. His team evaluated Norton-Cabernet Sauvignon hybrids and bred a new grape cultivar for making wine. Qiu has mentored many students over the years, training them in plant science and biotechnology along with transferrable skills necessary for a successful career.
